| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This replaces the duplicated arch-specific versions of "sys_pipe()" with one unified implementation. This removes almost 250 lines of duplicated code. It's marked __weak, so that *if* an architecture wants to override the default implementation it can do so by simply having its own replacement version, since many architectures use alternate calling conventions for the 'pipe()' system call for legacy reasons (ie traditional UNIX implementations often return the two file descriptors in registers) I still haven't changed the cris version even though Linus says the BKL isn't needed. I have confirmation that the Alpha bit results in a booting kernel. That leaves: blackfin, frv, sh and sparc untested. The deadlock in question was found by Russell: IRQ handle -> timer_tick() - xtime seqlock held for write -> update_process_times() -> run_local_timers() -> hrtimer_run_queues() -> hrtimer_get_softirq_time() - tries to get a read lock Now, Thomas assures me the fix is trivial, only do_timer() needs to be done under the xtime_lock, and update_process_times() can savely be removed from under it. The problem otherwise is that the linker can insert sufficient code between the slots in the trap table and the targets of the branch instructions in those slots that the displacement field in the instruction isn't sufficiently large. This is because the branch targets were in the .text section along with most of the other code in the kernel. One set which is exclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu, but also shared by remote cpus. In the current kernel, these two sets are not clearely separated out. This can potentially cause the same data cacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in unnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus. One way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per cpu data, both at the beginning and at the end. Because of the padding at both ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the interface to achieve this is not clean. This patch: Moves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked as ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data elements are cacheline aligned. And as such, this differentiates the local only data and remotely accessed data cleanly.
